Lea and Me: AFLS’ 1st ever dinner with the Chien’s back in 2013
It’s not a surprise to everyone that I am a big fan of Lea Salonga’s, but not everyone understands why. True, she probably doesn’t give a shit about me, but that never stops me from being a fan. Heck, I even went to Hong Kong for the sole reason of hearing her sing “Let It Go” live. *Okay, that’s not exactly the only reason, but it was one of the first reasons I decided to go.
I grew up watching Disney films; Aladdin was one of my favorites. It was that very particular movie that introduced me to Lea Salonga, but it wasn’t why I became a fan. I became a fan because she is what she is. How you see her on camera is how she is in “real life.” No sugarcoating. No pretensions. Just being her.
During her Playlist concert, fans were asked to submit their favorite LEAdventure (short for Lea Adventure = any memorable experience relating to anything Lea Salonga). I submitted a couple, but one particular experience stuck through with me—sitting in our living room with my sick mother watching the telecast of her The Broadway Concert. It didn’t particularly involve her, but it was one of the things that drew me closer to her and to my Mom. When my Mom passed away, Lea became my solitude. I listen to her whenever I miss my Mom and besides, her Mom also reminds me of my Mom. They’re both stage moms!
Another reason why Lea is (one of) my favorite person is because, duh, she’s just the best performer that ever graced the Philippine music scene. No question there. She’s the most popular Filipino singer, Disney Legend, AND Broadway Diva in the world. PLUS, she also just gets freaking good every year. I don’t know how she’s doing it, but damn, that woman is so fucking good. I thank all the music Gods for her.
Despite all of my LEAdventures, I’m still not that close to her. She knows me, yes, but that doesn’t mean we’re friends (yet). But I know, one day, we’ll get there. I just know.
