Blogging 101, Day One: Introduce Yourself
Today’s assignment: write and publish a “who I am and why I’m here” post.
Who Am I?
It’s funny how the first lesson is about introducing yourself. I mean, we all have been doing it ever since we started going to school; standing in front of the whole class and telling everyone your name and/or your age and where you live, but for some reason, introducing oneself isn’t the most comfortable thing to do for some of us. I know because I can relate.
You see, speaking up in front of an entire audience terrifies me, which is really weird because I am a dancer and I finished a degree in Mass Communication but until today, eight years after I started working, I’m still clueless as to how to “introduce myself.” I don’t even know how to start, but since this is an assignment, I guess I could start by finally revealing myself to anyone who’s spending their time reading this post (even though I promised myself I would never reveal anything specific about my identity upon creating this blog).
My name is Jhack. I’m a 28-year old woman from Manila, Philippines but living as if I’m a resident of any East Coast state. Wait, what?! I know, it’s complicated, but let me explain further. I’ve been working as an offshore employee for an internet marketing company based in Miami, Florida as an SEO Specialist/Writer/Link Builder/Team Leader. I am also the Show Notes Writer at ONCEPodcast at the moment. Before doing any of that, I was a Team Leader and Senior Writer at a local BPO company, but circumstances changed when my client (at the moment) in the said company offered me to work directly for him. I also said yes because I haven’t been feeling any growth on my part (personally and financially) despite being with my former employer for five years (and two years as a Team Leader).
When I’m not in front of my computer writing and building links for my clients, I enjoy reading books, listening to music, and watching my favorite movies and TV shows. I LOVE reading books so much! I love dancing as well so I always dance (usually inside my room) when I’m not working. I also listen to a wide variety of music; Pop, Rock, Broadway, Country, Jazz, Strings, Classical, OPM, anything!
Personality wise, I am a quiet girl, and this is awkward because why am I pulling own bench? My friends say I’m loyal and caring and thoughtful but I don’t know, maybe they’re just being kind. I actually think I’m mean to everyone. If I don’t like someone, I won’t be a two-faced bitch and act as if everything’s peachy. No. I don’t like wasting time, energy and emotions to people who don’t give a shit about me or what I do, so I understand when someone says they don’t like me. After all, all is fair in love and war and all that shit, right?
Whoa, wait a minute! Did I just dedicate four paragraphs introducing myself? Guess putting it into writing really is easier than saying these things out loud and in front of an audience.
Why blog publicly instead of keeping a private journal?
Actually, I do both. I blog publicly AND journal privately. I use this blog mostly to let out things that I couldn’t get off my brain, but I keep a private journal to write how my day went. I’ve been keeping a diary since I was in High School but the existence of online blogging didn’t stop me from keeping in the tradition so, that’s that.
The issue on topics:
It’s weird that I signed up for Blogging 101, actually. I’ve been doing this for more than eight years, so what possessed me to sign up? The truth is I was actually thinking about registering for both Blogging 101 and Writing 101, but decided to go with Blogging 101. I just felt like there’s something in Blogging 101 that I need to know more about.
As for the topics that I want to tackle in this blog, like I said, I use this blog mostly to blurt out things that has been stuck in my brain; small things, big issues, books, boys, the girl world, basically anything and everything that’s been happening to me. Without censorship! I know it’s not something that I could gain profit off, but it’s okay. It’s becoming more like my personal therapy.
Connections and Hopes:
Who would I love to connect with via this blog? Huh. Let’s see. The truth is when I started this blog, I intended for it to be as private as it can be. In short, no one from my list of friends (that I know of) know that this blog even exist. I initially wanted to set a password for this particular blog but decided not to because I really don’t know why. But if there’s anyone (real person okay, not bot) out there who can relate to my stories and rants, then you are, by all means, welcome to invade my private thoughts online.
I have been keeping this blog for a year so I guess I should give myself a pat in the back for keeping it going, yeah?
So why should you read my blog? You shouldn’t. It’s an utter waste of your precious time and it’s kind of my online journal. I don’t even offer nuggets of wisdom or any valuable shit like that. I’m just someone who finds pleasure in taking all my thoughts out on an online piece of paper; thoughts that are so important to me, yet holds no value to you. Then again, like I said, if you have a weird mind like mine then read on. You just might be the right kind of online ear, eyes and shoulders that I need (or not).
Wow, I can’t believe I made it through the first assignment (I think). Truth be told, I hate introducing myself. I hate talking about myself. I mean, sure, I like sharing what’s going on in my head but that doesn’t mean I love introducing myself to the public because offline, I’m pretty sure I won’t be saying whatever I have just told you guys in here. I’d be terrified to even open my mouth and recite one paragraph.
So there you go. I really hope I didn’t bore you with this looooong introduction.
KTHXBYE.

Now, I can say that I nailed 4 of the things I said about you in my comment in your post about – writing a list – what you have learned outside of school, except of course with the name of the university since you didn’t mention it here 🙂 As I have read many posts especially on the reason why they write, I can say most of you have so many things in common – I’ll just state two: having a journal and writing is your passion – Aww something I think I never did or have. Well, I guess as I say: better late than never lol 🙂 Although I understand that you didn’t create a blog for us to learn, still you managed to impart something, too good for me I’m addicted to reading 🙂 Great post and very beautiful blog!

Hey, you just keep writing. Maybe you haven’t found your niche, but that’s okay. In time, you will find it. And yes! You are mostly right! I do love to journal. I’ve been doing it since I was a little girl. And I love reading, too! OMG I love books! They’re like my kids. 🙂

I write only if it is an assignment or it is for a job (I’m really lazy to write – need to improve on that) but at least we have something in common. I love books but as you know, it is costly so I only buy those on sale and those I can afford. Usually, even if it is not in my budget but if I ever went to a Mall and I enter National Bookstore unless I really don’t have money, I can’t help but buy a book – it is the only thing I will buy.

I could very much relate to this. In fact, I wish I have conjured up this passage myself. Well done!

I write a lot and for that relate to your long introduction… and found it great, for someone who prepared us to read just a few words…you nailed it!
I totally agree with Wendy’s wise comments above. So no need to add more. Keep up writing.
I’m going to follow you too. Because your thoughts triggered my interest and also because one of my best friends is from your country, and I love her.

Oh, wow! That’s great! It’s always nice to hear when someone knows someone from my country. It’s like finding out that you’re my sister’s best friend (I don’t know, maybe it’s a Pinoy thing. Ask your best friend). And thank you for the follow! I’ll make sure to check out yours later.

Maybe I’m your sister’s best friend…is her name Mila? 🙂
I’ll ask her what is a Pinoy thing.

Oh, I can tell you what a Pinoy thing is (I think). You know how, when you found out that someone you just met know someone you know? It’s that feeling of being closer to the person even if you just met them; feels like home. I said that it might be a Pinoy thing because when we are in another country and found someone with the same nationality as ours, it feels like finding your best friend after a very long time. Does that make sense?

I know what you mean and feel the same when meeting someone from Brazil, even not even knowing who they are…It’s a feeling of sharing a common identity…whatever that is.

I was in a class last week where the instructor was talking about how to speak in public — specifically, how to read your work aloud to an audience — and the part that really stuck with me was his recommendation to focus on the audience, and their experience, not your own fears or concerns. Step up to the podium, the microphone, the introductory post, with the intention of giving them a good experience. It’s a small change in perspective, but a freeing one, to move from “omigosh what if I suck and they hate me” to “I want you to enjoy yourself”. Remember, even on the internet, people who come to your blog want you to succeed. They visit hoping to laugh, or learn, or just enjoy. (Doubly so in this closed group where we’re all in the same boat, I should think.) Very few people surf the net just to be jerks to the people they encounter. Be brave. Trust in yourself.

That’s a really inspiring advice. It’s not that I fear speaking in front of an audience, but more of I wasn’t as comfortable with it as putting words into writing.
