I’m pretty sure only one of you will understand the video because it’s in Filipino but just in case you can, here’s the conversation that piqued my interest and got me to write about my assignment for today.

How would you know if someone is gay or lesbian? Is it the way they act? How they dress or look? Is someone’s hair length a valid basis of someone coming out of the closet?

Above was an interview of a local artist named KZ Tandingan done by Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda in their show Aquino & Abunda Tonight. I saw this while I was watching another video of another local celebrity. I’m not a fan of hers; I don’t hate her, I’m simply not a fan, but there’s something in the video’s title that I found interesting.

In the video, Tandingan shared how one of the media-men asked her during a press conference if she’s coming out next a la Charice because she cut her hair. She then answered with, “just because I cut my hair short doesn’t mean I’m a lesbian.” AMEN TO THAT, SISTER!

I mean, how idiotic was that media-man who asked her that? That was probably the most sexist question I have ever heard. So, when a girl chopped her hair, it means she’s a lesbian and she’s probably coming out soon? What the actual fuck?!

Tandingan then revealed how she just had a boyfriend who, by the way, is very good looking. It should have been a good moment to prove that particular media-man wrong, but all I really wanted was to high five that press… in the face.

Another reason why I picked this because a few weeks ago, someone asked me if I have a boyfriend. I said no, then this person tells me, “Are you gay?” I was like, “Excuse me, just because I’m single doesn’t mean I’m a lesbian.” I didn’t actually tell him that—because he’s older than me and I respect elders—but I wish I did. What he said was wrong; it’s rude and annoying. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

I don’t understand some people. Why does someone’s appearance have to reflect their sexual preference? There are a lot of people out there who dresses like the hottest bachelors who also likes other men and girls who wears the skimpiest outfit but prefers kissing other girls. What do fashion and beauty choices have to do with a person’s sexuality? I, myself, have been wanting to try donning a short hair. Not a pixie, because I don’t know if I can pull it off, but something shorter. Does that mean I’m not straight? I don’t think so. So why judge a person based on their personal appearance? Think about it.

KTHXBYE.

  1. I hear ya sister! I’m old enough now that being single means people just assume I must be gay. It’s irritating. And what does it matter either way?! That’s the bit that annoys me. I’m not gay but I 100% support the cause. My wish is that the world would stop labeling. People are people and they will love who they love. Gender should not be an issue.
    Great post, really good.

  2. I loved this line, “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.” A post that makes me think while reading and that I’ll think about again later is my definition of a good post. Yours did that for me. Thanks!
