Writing 101, Day Three: Commit to a Writing Practice

Today’s Prompt: Write about the three most important songs in your life — what do they mean to you?
Today’s twist: You’ll commit to a writing practice.

I frowned upon reading today’s assignment because why, of all things, are we asked to choose JUST three songs that are important in our lives? It’s bad enough to pick the which among the hundreds I love, it’s worse to be told to choose just three. But I’m a big girl, and I’m gonna do it, even if it hurts to choose just three songs that have a great impact in my life.

No Sky Too Big, Lea Salonga

There are so many songs by Lea Salonga that I love; ones that takes weeks, even years, to get out of my mind off. However, No Sky Too Big is something that is special to me simply because of its meaning. No Sky Too Big is a song written by Freddie Santos (music by Marvin Querido) for Lea Salonga for the animated film, Tugger: The Jeep 4×4 Who Wanted to Fly. As a self-proclaimed Lea Salonga fan, it is such a shame to say that I haven’t even seen it. **Hey, I have been trying to find a copy, but I failed miserably.

What I love about this song is that its title alone already says a lot; No Sky Too Big. It’s basically saying that you can reach anything; do anything, as long as you don’t give up trying. Sure, it’s possible that you will fail, but it’s no excuse to give up, especially if there’s a fire burning inside of you that’s saying “you can do it.”

Pretty Hurts, Beyoncé

I’m going to go back a bit about my post regarding feminism and girl power on this one but not quite. Each of us, women especially, are expected to act a certain way. Media and fashion has constantly been telling us what’s perfect and not. Because of this, many girls, young ones to be exact, are being drawn to starve or to do whatever it takes just to look perfect, or a certain way the fashion industry currently suggests is pretty. It’s sickening, and this song reminds me that it’s okay to be imperfect; to not give a f*ck and just be yourself. After all, what’s important at the end of the day isn’t what you wear or how you are on the outside, but what the inside is showing. That’s what real beauty and perfection is.

How Did You Know, Chiqui Pineda

I’ve always associated this song with my parents. My Dad always asked me to sing this song at Karaoke and I don’t really know why until I really looked into its lyrics. It’s actually a love song by a Filipina artist, Chiqui Pineda, and this song has been one of those songs where it has been sung probably a million times than I can count, has been covered way too often, and has been picked as a wedding song. However, How Did You Know is also one of the rarest OPM (Original Pilipino Music) songs that holds a special place in my heart, because no matter what happens, and whatever challenge our family may face, I know deep down that we still, and will always love one another. And, just like the song, there just are no words that can express how much I love not just my parents, but also my family.
