Writing 101, Day 2: A Room with a View

Today’s Prompt: If you could zoom through space in the speed of light, what place would you go to right now?
Today’s twist: organize your post around the description of a setting.

If I could have Dorothy’s Silver or Ruby slippers, I’d click it three times to get to Oz.
If I could only find the looking glass, I’d cross right then and visit Wonderland.
If I see a hovercraft, I’d hail it and ask for a ride to Panem.
And if I ran a brick wall, I’d tap it and enter Diagon Alley, not looking back at all.

I don’t care if I’d have to face the Wicked Witch,
or the Jabberwocky, or the Mad Hatter, or the Red Queen or the Chesire Cat.
If I’d have to volunteer as Tribute I would,
And if I had to join the Battle of Hogwarts, I would,
Just to make sure I’d escape this cruel, cruel world.

Lead me to the wardrobe that will take me to Narnia,
Give me a beanstalk, and ask Captain Hook to set sail in Neverland.
Call Ariel and let her take me under the sea,
play with Nemo or even with Dory.
Even if it means I have to face the Sea Goddess, Ursula,
I’d rather stay there than reside in this wasteland.

I don’t know who or what I will find there,
but whatever it is I am to face, I don’t care.
It can’t be worse than what is happening everywhere,
So I’d rather dream of them than live in this current nightmare.

About the assignment:

When I read today’s assignment, the first thing that comes to mind was the Astral Plane. I was supposed to write something about it. But then, I thought, if I’m to write about the astral plane, what better way to write it than use literary references? I love to read, and it’s an escape that anyone can go to without literally moving. Reading takes you to all kinds of places; dystopia, fantasy world; name it, they have it.

Which is why I decided to write something to pay homage to some of my favorite fantasy worlds. Because, really, if I could, say, go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter or Neverland, Wonderland, or even Oz, I’d take it. I’d go there and deal with all those creatures than stay where I am right now. Heck, I’d even join Snow White and Prince Charming in the Enchanted Forest and be swept by the Evil Queen’s Dark Curse into Storybrooke.

I don’t think I’d have to reiterate much on what they are and how important they are to me, because truth be told, all I wanted was a place to breath; think, be myself (or be someone else), find my worth. Then again, maybe I just need to visit the Disneyland or the Universal Studios.

KTHXBYE.

  1. Thank you! You have said half of what I feel! I love that you include Storybrooke with all of these places. I would love to join you on most of these… though I might balk at the whole Panem thing, just because I’d be wiped out in a flat second. 🙂

    • Hahaha! Really? I’d join Katniss and their little Revolution. And yes! I love Storybrooke and Once Upon a Time! It’s a motherload of fantasy and fairy tales but I don’t care! I’m in! 🙂

  2. I loved this! Very different from what I normally enjoy, but I can relate. This reminded me of my teenage years and the continuing years of “bad luck”. While my luck is changing, your words resonate truth of how people feel at some time in their lives. I cannot wait to read more from you. Stay creative, as you do it well!
